Day Service CiC aims to provide a nurturing service which encourages our members to feel involved in their local community and socialise with their peers, we want members to feel supported to continue to live independently and achieve positive outcomes. A Day in the life of Daycare, by Mary Hunter I attend CiC 2 days per week but would love to come every day! I really enjoy attending as it gets me out the house as my family work so if I didn't attend, I would be socially isolated without seeing anyone. I look forward to seeing my friends and having a chat. I feel safe when attending and staff are very helpful and patient. The transport is a god-send and so important to us all as many of us wouldn't be able to attend if we didn't have it.
Meals are provided and there is always plenty of food for us all! The food is lovely.
I also receive a Phonelink call in the evening to have a chat with the girls.
All in all, the service I receive at Caring in Craigmillar is brilliant. If I can't manage anything the staff are always on hand to help me. A helping hand is just sometimes what we all need. I feel wanted here and my voice is always heard.
I could not fault the service at all, I can only wish I could attend more days. I have so much fun."
Activities
In 2017, we received some fantastic news that we were successful in securing a 5 year grant from The National Lottery Community Fund to deliver activities and social events for all our members.
This grant allowed us to employ 2 specialist dementia activity workers, who design and deliver a varied programme of activities using a person-centered approach. This is a fantastic opportunity for all the members to experience new activities and new environments, including connecting members with opportunities and integrating them into their local community. Please read below more from our Activity Team which highlights just some of the many benefits of our programmes:
Since starting our role, our priority was to get to know our members and find out about their
interests and willingness to try new things which enabled us to plan activities
accordingly to their needs.
For centre based activities, we found that quizzes were popular and incorporated reminiscence work by playing Name that Tune, using music from the 1940's and following decades, often resulting in a singalong! We are amazed at how many of the song lyrics everyone remembers!
Word games encourage
cognitive development as well as social interaction, with hangman and
countdown style games. Floor games bring everyone together and facilitate group
discussions and help strengthen peer relationships. Everyone is given a choice
to participate in activities and it is always reiterated that our members-only
do what they are comfortable with.
As well as our regular in house activities such as bingo, knitting, dominoes etc, we have enjoyed a varied range of trips out and have since developed a Walking Group. Members are taken out weekly to a local community garden with cafe facilities to enjoy some tea and home-baked goods. We also have a beautiful garden here at our centre which the members have enjoyed thoroughly (especially with this great summer we've had) and they actively plant and tend to our garden, giving them a great sense of achievement!
